Elgin National Road Race Pennants

SOLD

In late August between 1910 and 1915, then again in 1919, 1920 and 1933, the Elgin National Road Races were held on variations of an 8.5 mile circuit on the west side of town. The events drew huge crowds of thrill seekers to witness the great drivers of the early days of auto racing compete at high speeds on public roads. The gravel track required an estimated 50,000 gallons of oil to keep the dust down and local farmers sold tickets, concessions and lodging to the thousands of spectators who flocked to that industrial town west of Chicago for 2 days of death defying action.
Over the years, Elgin National Road Races drew such names as Barney Oldfield, Eddie Rickenbacker, Ray Harroun, Ralph DePalma, Tommy Milton, Fred Frame and Ralph Mulford to compete for the Tiffany designed solid silver Elgin National Cup.

Memorabilia from the Elgin National Road Races is extremely rare, as you might imagine, so we are very pleased to offer this pair of century old Official Pennants from the 1910 and 1913 Elgin National Road Races.

Wednesday Afternoon Update:

More importantly, so is the air conditioning.

There’s a big generator parked behind Suite L humming away while they repair whatever exploded out there yesterday. We expect to maintain regular hours for the rest of the week.

Please note, we will be closed the next two Saturdays.

Paul

About 1pm Tuesday, we lost most of our electrical power after hearing a BOOM outside the 5120 Belmont Building. Commonwealth Edison says they will have it fixed by 7pm, so we have called it a day. We were unable to ship anything today but I’ll be checking email throughout the afternoon. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Cosworth: The Search for Power

IN STOCK:

by Graham Robson

Not only has Cosworth designed and supplied many race car engines, which won F1, CART, and many other Championship races, but it has also produced many celebrated high-performance road-car engines. In more recent times, its growing expertise in developing electronic data capture components, and in providing ultra-high-tech engine manufacturing facilities, have made it a world leader at many levels. The expansion continues, and in this book the Cosworth story has been brought up-to-the-minute to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the birth of the legendary DFV F1 engine.

Graham Robson is one of the most experienced, prolific and versatile motoring historians in the world, and is recognized as one of the authorities on anything concerning Ford in motorsport. He watched his first F1 GP – at Aintree – in 1955, and has never lost touch with the cars, the technical trends, and – most importantly – the personalities connected with placing Ford, and Cosworth, at the pinnacle of F1. He was close to Cosworth, both as a working historian, and as a personal friend of the company’s senior personalities, throughout the lengthy period covered by the DFV – and considers it an honour to have been entrusted with the compilation of this amazing story.
