Competition by European vehicles forced American car manufacturers to incorporate new features, resulting in legendary engineering triumphs (and, essentially, works of art). Some of the greatest drivers in racing history were active during this time—Ralph DePalma, Dario Resta, Eddie Rickenbacker, the Chevrolet brothers, Jimmy Murphy. 1965 was the year that Clark won both the Formula One World Championship and the Indianapolis 500, the only driver ever to accomplish that feat.
5 of his 6 Grand Prix victories that year came at the wheel of a Lotus 33, including the British GP at Silverstone.
