1965 Shelby GT350R Prototype
The Flying Mule – Ken Miles

1/18 scale diecast from Acme Trading Company

It was Valentines Day, February 14, in 1965, and it was the first time a GT350 Competition, more commonly known as the GT350R, was entered into a SCCA sanctioned race at Green Valley Raceway. Miles was behind the wheel, and he won the race, proving the capability of the GT350R in the process. Famously, he got the car airborne at one point, with all four wheels in the air! This feat earned the car its famous Flying Mule nickname. With Miles’ impressive victory in the GT350R’s first ever race, it proved that Shelby knew what he was doing and was the launching pad for all of his future success in racing and building high performance racing machines! *Other noted drivers who spent time behind the wheel of the ’65 GT350R Prototype included Bob Bondurant, Chuck Cantwell, Peter Brock, Jerry Titus, and of course Carroll Shelby.

Spark Email 10.27.21

Spark Model sent out an email blast this morning with information on future 1/43 scale releases. We were very excited about two of the items on the list: The #21 Vollstead Ford driven by Jim Clark in the 1967 Rex Mays 300 at Riverside, his final US race appearance. He was the only driver to challenge Dan Gurney that day. Also, the 1967 Sebring winning Ford GT40 Mk.IV driven by Mario Andretti and Bruce McLaren.

We’ll upload the complete list soon, but you can get on the list early for these two by reserving HERE.

‘Savage Angel’ – Signed Copies

‘Savage Angel’ is the dual biography of driver David ‘Swede’ Savage, a protege of the great Dan Gurney and his daughter Angela, who was not yet born when Swede, running second to Bobby Unser after leading most of the early going, lost his life in a fiery accident during the 1973 Indianapolis 500. It also tells Angela’s story who, 41 years later, made her first trip to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and was embraced by the racing community giving her strength and direction after a hard and tumultuous life.

We will have a limited quantity of signed copies of ‘Savage Angel’ delivered later this week. Please reserve by Thursday, September 30 to reserve your copy.
