In his first season as a full time driver for Vel's Parnelli Jones Racing, 'Pelican Joe' was a model of consistency, with top 6 finishes in the first three races. He led 21 laps of the 1971 Indianapolis 500 before retiring with a turbocharger problems but rebounded to take 2nd in the next two races. Later that year, Leonard won the California 500 at Ontario Motor Speedway and clinched the USAC National Championship with a 3rd place finish at Phoenix.
