Lola GT: The DNA of the Ford GT40

by John Starkey

The GT40 is often perceived as the ultimate all-American race car, and when it was unveiled to the press in 1964 little was said about where the car came from. The perception that this car was an all-US creation was, no doubt, far from discouraged, yet nothing could be further from the truth.

While only three Lola GT Mk 6 were ever built, the huge significance of the role of Lola and the GT Mk 6 in racing history, and to the Ford GT40 in particular, cannot be underestimated. The GT was a revolutionary car, a rear-engined GT racing car with some of the best technology of the time – and it was immensely quick.

Following the MK 6 concept’s Racing Car Show debut, the car was raced at Silverstone and the Nurburgring 1000km, with a second car, sporting a lightweight aluminum monocoque, being completed and prepared for the ’63 24 Hours of Le Mans. Despite there not being enough time to fully prep or test the car – and it having to be retired during the race due to a gear selector failure – Ford Motor Company could see the Mk 6’s immense potential, a potential Ford wanted for itself.

Available in the US June/July 2022

As most of you are aware, supply chain and other delays continue throughout the economy. Although accurate release dates for import items are essentially non-existent, we do our best to keep you up to date. Last week, I mentioned that we would be adding models and other items that are ‘in harbor’ to the Coming Soon page at MotorsportCollector.com. We’ve just added 30+ items that are expected to land here at TMC this month. Many more are pre-sold out.

Coming Soon:

As I mentioned in this week’s Email Update, we are working hard to provide information on incoming shipments that have been delayed by supply chain issues that are effecting almost everything currently. When we receive an update of any kind, we will post that information in our Coming Soon section.

It looks like a large shipment of models that has been sitting in LA harbor for a month or two has finally been unloaded and should arrive here later this month.

Click HERE for a list of what is still available after all advance orders have been filled. We will update the Coming Soon page as we receive additional information.
